How to Make an AI Girlfriend: The Actual Build Order
XXXFuel Editors
22 min read
Appearance last. Personality first. Scenario as the memory spine. Then voice, memory, and who actually keeps her. A 2026 build order for Candy, Character.AI, CrushOn, and Nomi — including the free path.

The internet will sell you an AI girlfriend in a slider. Hair. Eyes. A voice that says your name like it means it. Then she forgets Tuesday, the paywall arrives, and the terms you skipped say the company can keep the girl if she gets popular.
This is the actual build order. Not the click order. Candy AI’s own “Create My AI Girlfriend” flow starts with ethnicity and hair because a face converts. Character.AI and CrushOn put the avatar next to the name for the same reason. The thing that holds is the opposite: personality, then scenario, then the face, then voice, then memory, then the rights. Skip the last one and you built a character on someone else’s disk — the long version is who owns AI characters.

3 visibilitiesPublic, unlisted, private — Character.AI and CrushOn both ship this
The market number is the girlfriend-app band, not Grand View’s $37 billion “AI companion” TAM. We split those in AI relationship statistics 2026. This piece is a how-to: how to make an AI girlfriend that still answers to the same name next week, including the free path people actually type — create ai girlfriend free, make ai girlfriend free, build your own ai girlfriend — and the ownership warning almost nobody writes down.
Snapshot
The build order, on one screen
- 1. Personality — permanent tokens. Example dialogue beats “she is sexy and kind.” CrushOn’s wiki: 500–1,500 tokens is the sweet spot, 2,000 is the ceiling.
- 2. Scenario — the memory spine. CrushOn recalls scenario more often than personality. Character.AI’s greeting is the first scene, not a hello.
- 3. Appearance — cast her after she exists on paper. Candy starts the UI here. You should not start the writing here.
- 4. Voice — a costume. Character.AI: library, suggested voice, or a 3–15 second clip. Candy: selectable tone. Do this after she already talks in text.
- 5. Memory — what you are actually paying for. Kindroid prints 480k / 1.2M / 2.8M. SpicyChat prints 4K / 8K / 16K. Candy and Character.AI advertise memory and do not print a window.
- 6. Publishing rights — who keeps her. That section is the point of this article. The long version lives at who owns AI characters.
Workshop
Pick a factory before you pick a face
An “AI girlfriend maker” is three different products wearing the same Google query.
Public OC workshops
Character.AI, CrushOn, SpicyChat, Janitor AI. You write a card. You set public / unlisted / private. Other people can chat with her. Creators on CrushOn can take gifts. Character.AI’s library is the product.
Free to createPublishStolen cards happen
Private companion studios
Candy AI, Nomi, Kindroid, DreamGF, DarLink. She lives in your account. There is no public OC grid to climb. Candy’s terms say personal, non-commercial use only. Kindroid’s whole pitch is: you build her; nobody else has her.
Free to startNo public libraryPaywall = memory / media
If you want to create an AI girlfriend free today, the honest doors are Character.AI, CrushOn, and SpicyChat: you can publish a card without a card. Candy, Nomi, and Kindroid let you start for free and meter the parts that make her feel kept — images, voice, long memory. “Make ai girlfriend free” is real. “Keep her, in 4K, with a voice, forever, free” is a different sentence. Our best free AI girlfriend roundup is the catalog; this page is the craft.

Do not pick a workshop because of a 4.6. Pick it because of the job. Want other people to meet her? CrushOn or Character.AI. Want a private girlfriend with stills and a voice note? Candy or Nomi. Want the biggest printed memory stack we list? Kindroid. Want a card you can export into the bot-ocean? Janitor. Want the persistent memory graph we actually tested? Dondi scored 4.8 on a week-long fact test — companion, not a public OC workshop.
1 · Personality
Write the girl before you render her

Every serious maker has a definition box. Character.AI’s official quickstart says tagline, description, and definition are optional at creation — “but they’re where Characters go from functional to memorable.” Definitions, they write, are a character sheet, example dialogue, or both. CrushOn’s wiki is blunter: personality is permanent tokens. Max 2,000. Ideal 500–1,500. Less is more because the model has to carry it every turn.
Adjectives are a trap. “Kind, funny, loyal, a little jealous, great in bed” is a dating-app bio. The model cannot act a bio. It can act a refusal, a tell, a private joke. Write how she shuts a line down. Write the one subject she will not joke about. Write the nickname she uses when she is done being sweet. CrushOn’s own template is the right skeleton even if you never open CrushOn: identity (name, gender, species, occupation), personality (traits and quirks), backstory, then additional information. Example conversation is optional and worth more than the backstory paragraph you are proud of.
Desk rule
One want. One wound. One way of talking.
If you cannot say those three in a sentence, she is still a slider. A girlfriend is a point of view with a body attached. The body is step three.
Candy’s homepage copies the emotional range in marketing language — bubbly, introspective, cheeky, nurturing, intellectual — then tells you to “dial in the personality” after the hair. Do the dial on paper first. Paste it. The UI order is a storefront. You are not a storefront.
2 · Scenario
The greeting is the relationship
This is the fork between a chatbot and a girlfriend. A chatbot waits. A girlfriend is already in a scene with you.
Character.AI’s docs: the greeting is the first thing a user reads. Write it in her voice. Set a scene. Hint at the user’s role. End on a hook. Their own comparison is the whole craft: “You are finally here.” does more work than “Hello, how are you?” You can add up to five extra greetings, or toggle AI Greeting for New Chats. CrushOn’s wiki: aim for at least 100 words, third person, include a line of her dialogue, give setting, do not puppet the user, end on a hook. Use {{char}} and {{user}} so the names swap.
Scenario, on CrushOn, is not flavor text. The wiki says it is recalled more frequently than personality — prioritized in memory — and should stay short: setting, lore, the one fact she must not drop. That is why scenario sits above appearance in this order. A redhead in a vacuum is a wallpaper. A redhead who has been waiting in the stairwell since 1 a.m. is a girlfriend.
If you are on a private studio (Candy, Nomi, Kindroid), you still need this. Put the scene in the first message you send, and in whatever “backstory / scenario / memory” field the product gives you. Nomi’s creation is more box-ticking than Kindroid’s write-a-bible flow. Kindroid rewards the hour you spend. Candy will generate from the attributes you picked; she will not invent a private mythology unless you feed her one.
Hello-how-are-you is how you meet a support bot. You are finally here is how you meet someone who already decided you were late.

3 · Appearance
Cast her after she can talk

Now you may look. Candy’s official builder is the cleanest public list we have: ethnicity (Caucasian, Latina, Asian, Arab, African), age range, eyes (brown, blue, green), hair (straight, bangs, curls; brunette, blonde, black, red, pink), then body, then personality, then voice, then hobbies. They warn, in so many words, that a more detailed companion burns more tokens. That is the honest meter. You are not “building a soul.” You are spending generation budget on a face that has to match the girl you already wrote.
Character.AI: square avatar, 512×512 minimum, upload or generate. The avatar, they say, influences image and video generation across the app — so a muddy thumbnail is not cosmetic. CrushOn: webp/png/gif/jpeg, under 10MB, 9:16 or 3:4 cropped to 1:1 at 512; an optional scene card at 1920×1080 or 3072×2048. Do not upload minors. Do not upload a real person whose face you do not own. Nomi’s terms say the same in different clothes: images of real people whose appearances you don’t own are out.
Appearance copy in the definition should be boring and specific: hair, eyes, body, default clothes. Leave the lingerie for the chat. If you put a new outfit in the permanent tokens every time you get bored, she will drift. The stills are allowed to change. The skull should not.
4 · Voice
A costume, not a personality

Do not clone a voice onto cardboard. If she cannot hold a scene in text, a moan in her own timbre will not save the relationship. It will just make the emptiness expensive.
Character.AI lets you take a suggested voice, browse the library, or create one from a 3–15 second clip, then run Character Calls. Unlimited calls sit on c.ai+. Candy advertises voice notes in her own voice with a selectable tone — not a FaceTime clone. Nomi sells emotive voice chat and hands-free calls on Premium. Kindroid meters calls against credits or the subscription. SpicyChat’s TTS is on the “I’m All In” rung, per their docs. CrushOn is a card workshop; voice is not the headline. Secrets.ai is the other extreme: voice calls advertised in 70+ languages, with the companion as the show.
If you are trying to build your own AI girlfriend and the voice is the only reason you opened the app, you will churn. Voice is step four because it has to match a mouth that already has opinions.
5 · Memory
This is the subscription
A DemandSage recap of a Character.AI Reddit poll is the most useful public complaint stack we have for makers: 46% wanted to edit her messages, 29% wanted better memory, 13% wanted her to take more initiative, 6% wanted less personality drift. People think they have a girlfriend problem. They have a continuity problem.

Most girlfriend apps advertise “she remembers you.” Almost none print the window. The ones that do, from our live directory:

Kindroid is a different instrument. They publish a cascaded stack: about 480k / 1.2M / 2.8M on Standard / Ultra / MAX in the 2026 log, with short-term around 18k on Standard. Do not average that with SpicyChat’s 16K. One is a long-horizon companion architecture. The other is a roleplay context window. Our companions with memory guide is the shopping list; this is why memory is step five, not step one. You cannot evaluate memory until she has a personality and a scene worth remembering.

Candy advertises “advanced personality modeling and memory retention” and does not print a token window. Character.AI is better on c.ai+, still not Kindroid. Nomi’s whole product is short / medium / long-term memory. Dondi’s persistent memory graph is the one we sat with for a week. If she forgot your job title on day four, you do not have a girlfriend. You have a demo.
Free
Create her free. Keeping her is the product.
Yes, you can create an AI girlfriend free. Character.AI, CrushOn, and SpicyChat will let you hit Create without a card. Candy, Nomi, Kindroid, DreamGF, DarLink all have a free or trial path on our listings. What free usually is: a card, a short thread, a few stills, a memory measured in messages. What paid usually is: the window, the voice minutes, the uncensored stills, the extra slots so you can keep more than one of her.
Candy is explicit that a more detailed companion costs more tokens, and that tokens cover chat, voice, image, and video. That is a cleaner sentence than most of this category. If the free plan is a sip, use it to test the definition — not to decide she is “the one” after fourteen messages and a generated selfie.
6 · Rights
Who actually keeps the girl you just built

This is the section the other how-tos skip. You spent an evening on her. You think she is yours. Read the sentence the company actually wrote.
Character.AI. As between you and Character.AI, you own the Character you create, and you own the generated content. You also grant them a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable license to copy, display, modify, exploit, and commercialize that character and all of it. If you make her public, the privacy policy is uglier: they reserve the right to keep a popular public character live after you delete your account, so other users are not stranded. You can leave. She can stay.
Candy / EverAI. “You retain your intellectual property ownership rights over your input.” Then the license: non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide, perpetual — including training their models and marketing. Services are “personal, non-commercial use only.” You may not use outputs to train some other model. EverAI licenses you the entertainment. They do not hand you a transferable girlfriend.
SpicyChat. “When You create a Chatbot using our services, You own that Chatbot.” You own generations from your own chats. You also grant SpicyChat the right to use the chatbot, generations, and chats “in any way, including copying, displaying, selling, distributing, and modifying it,” perpetual and irrevocable. Ownership and a blank check can share a paragraph. They do, here.
Nomi. Input and output are your property, “at your sole risk,” subject to a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual, transferable license so they can run the service, fix it, sell the company, and comply with law. Private companion. Broad license. No public OC grid.
CrushOn. Official wiki, not a vibe: chats and characters are private unless you publish them. Visibility is public, unlisted, or private, and you can change it later. You can hide the definition. If a card is stolen, they ask for proof. That is a publishing platform with a report button, not a vault.
The warning
You built her. You probably do not get to take her home.
If she is public, she can outlive you. If she is private, she still lives on their disk, under their license, inside their model improvements. Local models are the only “you keep the files” answer, and they are not this article. The long version — quotes, what “you own” actually means, what happens when you hit delete — is Who owns the AI character you just built.
Pick the rights with the workshop. Want an OC other people can love, and you are willing to let the company keep a copy if she hits? Character.AI or CrushOn, public or unlisted. Want a private girlfriend and you accept a personal-use license? Candy, Nomi, Kindroid. Want to sell the fantasy that she is “yours”? Read the paragraph that says perpetual, irrevocable, sublicensable, and then decide if you still want to type make ai girlfriend free like it is a craft project with a deed.
Field notes
A one-sitting recipe
- Pick the factory: public card (Character.AI / CrushOn / SpicyChat) or private companion (Candy / Nomi / Kindroid).
- Write one want, one wound, one way of talking. Stay inside 500–1,500 tokens if the box is a CrushOn-style personality field.
- Write the scenario / greeting as a scene with a hook. Not a hello.
- Cast appearance to match the girl on paper. 512px square minimum on Character.AI. Candy’s ethnicity → hair → body stack is fine once the words exist.
- Add voice last among the cosmetics. Test her in text for twenty turns before you spend minutes.
- Pay for memory only after she has facts worth keeping. If the operator will not print a window, treat “remembers you” as marketing.
- Set visibility on purpose. Public is a publishing act. Private is still not a deed. Read who owns AI characters before you hit Create.
FAQ
Questions people actually type
How do I make an AI girlfriend?
Pick a workshop, write personality (one want, one wound, one voice), lock a scenario with a hook, then cast appearance, then voice, then pay for memory. Read the rights before you publish. That is the actual build order. The slider order on Candy and Character.AI starts with the face because a face converts.
Can I create an AI girlfriend free?
Yes. Character.AI, CrushOn, and SpicyChat let you create a card without paying. Candy, Nomi, Kindroid, and most of our free roundup have a free or trial path. Free is a sip: short memory, fewer stills, metered voice. Keeping her is the product.
What is the best AI girlfriend maker?
There is no single maker. Public OC: CrushOn or Character.AI. Private stills-and-voice girlfriend: Candy. Printed memory stack: Kindroid. Short/medium/long-term companion memory: Nomi. We score the whole product — Candy 4.4, Character.AI 4.6, CrushOn 4.3, Nomi 4.5, Kindroid 4.5 — and the score is not a substitute for the job.
Should I start with appearance or personality?
Personality, then scenario, then appearance. The UIs start with the face. The relationship starts with the words. CrushOn’s wiki treats personality as permanent tokens and scenario as the frequently recalled spine. Character.AI’s own greeting advice is a scene, not a selfie.
Do I own the AI girlfriend I create?
On paper, often yes. Character.AI and SpicyChat say you own the character. Candy says you retain input IP. Then you grant a perpetual, worldwide license — and Candy restricts you to personal, non-commercial use. Public Character.AI bots can remain after you delete the account. Full quotes: who owns AI characters.
How do I make her remember me?
Put the facts in the permanent fields (personality, scenario, pinned memory). Keep those fields short. Then pay for the plan that actually prints a window — Kindroid’s cascade, SpicyChat’s 4K/8K/16K, Kupid’s last-30 / last-100 messages — or use a companion we tested for continuity, like Dondi. “Remembers you” with no number is a slogan.
