Character.AI is the big character-chat app. You search a public library of Characters — fandom, original, helpful, romantic — tap one, and talk. What Character.AI actually is
The homepage still leads with the library. Character.AI says there are more than ten million Characters. Anyone can create one and put it in the search box. That is why the app feels like a destination rather than a diary: you arrive looking for a specific persona, not to design one from a blank page.
Character Calls are the other half. You tap call and talk out loud. Character.AI launched the feature as a real phone-style conversation, not a clip generator. The official “Call Center” video is still the cleanest demo. On c.ai+, calls are unlimited, chats drop the ads and the peak-hour slow mode, memory improves, and the newest models (DeepSqueak in current write-ups) unlock. Charms sit on top as the in-app currency for extras such as extra swipes and regenerations; Plus adds a bonus on Charm packs.
The filter
Character.AI will not follow every prompt. That is a design choice, not a glitch. Romance-adjacent Characters exist. Unfiltered roleplay does not. CrushOn and SpicyChat were built for people who hit that ceiling. Kindroid and Nomi were built for people who wanted one private companion with a longer memory than a public bot usually keeps.

Who it is for
Character.AI fits anyone who wants a specific Character — a show, an original, a voice — and can live with the filter. Where it falls short
Memory on the free tier is thin next to Kindroid. Character Calls are voice, not a generated music video and not a live camera. Fake “c.ai plus” sites exist; the real one is character.ai.
