AI relationship statistics 2026: dating copilots, girlfriends, and a $2.9 billion market

U.S. singles are using AI to write bios and plan dates. A smaller slice is dating the model. The girlfriend-app market is about $2.9 billion in 2026 — not the $37 billion companion TAM. Charts, sources, and the generation split.

Two numbers keep getting smashed together. One is a dating copilot: singles asking ChatGPT to rewrite a bio, pick a restaurant, or unstick a dead thread. The other is an AI girlfriend app: a named companion you return to, with memory, a face, and a subscription. Research and Markets puts that second market at about $2.91 billion in 2026. SNS Insider had it at $3.08 billion in 2025 and $19.09 billion by 2035. Grand View Research’s much larger “AI companion” TAM ($36.8 billion in 2025) includes workplace bots and device assistants. If you quote $37 billion as “AI girlfriends,” you are mixing categories. This piece keeps them apart.
The human story is simpler than the TAM. Match’s Singles in America 2025 found 26% of U.S. singles used AI to improve dating, up from 6% in 2024. 16% had used AI as a romantic companion. An Arrows survey of 1,008 U.S. singles in February 2026 put broader dating-tool use at 54%. Pew Research Center, asking all U.S. adults — not just singles — found only 4% using chatbots for companionship and 10% for emotional support. Among U.S. teens, Common Sense Media (2025) found 72% using AI for companionship. Those three samples should not be averaged.

Girlfriend apps
$2.91B in 2026. Research and Markets had $2.32B in 2025. SNS Insider: $3.08B (2025) → $19.09B (2035). Market.us: $2.7B (2024) → $24.5B (2034).

“AI companion” TAM
$36.8B in 2025, $48.0B in 2026, $318B by 2033 (Grand View, 31% CAGR). Includes workplace bots and device assistants. Consumer slice ~$13.2B.

The figure people want on a slide is $2.9 billion. It is real enough to cite, with a caveat: syndicated TAM shops do not publish their SKU lists. Do not confuse that with Grand View’s companion TAM. For a directory of girlfriend and dating companions, the $3 billion band is the honest headline. The $37 billion band is “everything we can call a companion.”
Spend inside the girlfriend-app band is still small next to hype. One 2026 industry recap put cumulative revenue across 214 apps since late 2022 at about $427 million, including $163 million in early 2026 — a floor on what cleared payment processors, not a rival to SNS’s 2035 TAM. Payment friction, app-store rules, and age-gating are the governor. The product ladder is catalog chat, then voice, then short video, then live windows — the same path on Candy AI, Dondi, Nomi, and FLIRTcam.
Dating copilot
Profiles, flirting, first dates

Most “AI dating” is not a girlfriend. It is a ghostwriter. Arrows (February 2026, 1,008 U.S. singles) is the cleanest public breakdown we have:
| Use | Share of singles |
|---|---|
| Suggest date ideas and activities | 49% |
| Analyze conversations | 45% |
| Write or improve a dating profile | 44% |
| Keep an ongoing chat alive | 37% |
| Opening messages / flirt lines | 34% |
| Help end a conversation | 24% |
| Help end a relationship | 19% |
Match, 2025
26% of singles used AI to improve dating, versus 6% a year earlier. That is a four-fold jump in twelve months — still a copilot, not a girlfriend.
Hily, online daters
87% of Millennials and 82% of Gen Z use AI in the process. 95% of those users plan to keep doing it. Profiles and chat suggestions dominate.
Outcomes from the same 2025–26 cluster: 48% of AI users said it boosted confidence. AI-assisted profiles got 50% more interest in one test (36% vs 24%). AI users logged 2.9 first dates on average against 1.4 for non-users. Softer lifts: 37% better conversations, 17% more matches, 15% more first dates, 14% more second dates. 8% said someone called them out for using AI.
Generations
Millennials run the copilot. Gen Z dates the model.

Millennials
Heaviest instrument users. Hily: 87% use AI to support dating; 62% say it helps them present their best selves. Match: 23% have used AI as a romantic companion.
Gen Z
Close on tools (82% Hily) and ahead on companions: 33% of Gen Z singles (Match). Wiingy’s enthusiast sample (n=1,532): 41% “in an AI relationship,” 77% reporting an emotional connection — not a census.
Gen X is in the copilot, not the companion: 48% report using AI for dating, 49% for date ideas, but they are the ghosters — 25% would ghost someone for using AI, versus 13% of Gen Z. Arrows has 28% of Gen Z using AI to help end conversations. The breakup is being drafted too.
People will use the model to get a date, punish a date for using the model, and a slice of Gen Z will skip the date and stay with the model.

Companions
From flirting copilot to a named relationship

This is the transition the $2.9 billion forecast is betting on: people who started with a dating copilot and stayed with a character. Match’s 16% is the conservative U.S. singles number. It is already larger than Pew’s 4% companionship rate among all adults, because Pew is not sampling Tinder. Companion products sell continuity: memory, voice, stills, sometimes a live window. Market.us claims over 55% of girlfriend-app users interact daily in 2025 — a usage-intensity claim, not a census.
Scale, with a caveat
Character.AI is the ceiling — and the legal risk
~20 million monthly actives and 166 million+ visits in 2026 snapshots, ~52% aged 18–24. It is not a girlfriend app. It is the default character surface a lot of people use as a girlfriend. Lawsuits over teen harm, and Italy’s Garante €5 million fine on Replika / Luka, are now part of the category’s political risk. The TAM does not include legal reserves. Operators should.
Flirting is the bridge skill. 34% of Arrows respondents used AI for opening messages. That is still human-to-human dating with a model in the middle. The jump is when the model is the other party: scheduled check-ins, voice notes, generated photos, a name you do not swipe past.
Who is asked
Pew adults vs Common Sense teens

Pew, U.S. adults, 2026
About half of adults use AI chatbots. 10% for emotional support. 4% for companionship. Search and work dominate. Teen Pew: 64% use a chatbot, 12% for emotional support, 16% for casual chat.
Common Sense, U.S. teens, 2025
n=1,060 ages 13–17. Wide definition: “digital friends or characters you can text whenever you want.” Result: 72% companionship. If your board deck uses 72% to sell an 18+ girlfriend app, you are citing children.
Trust
AI writes the profile. Humans still want the person.

The same surveys that show AI lifting matches also show a penalty when the other person finds out. 62% of Gen Z daters lose interest if AI is used in the conversation. 70% of Millennial daters say discovering AI in the opener would hurt interest. 63% of male daters lose interest in AI-created profiles; 54% of young female daters prefer human-written ones. 51% of young women would not date someone who uses AI companion apps. 25% of Gen X would ghost for AI use.

Public philosophy is frostier than dater tactics. About 66% of Americans say AI should not decide who falls in love. 50% think AI may make meaningful connections harder; 58% of adults under 30 agree. Only 5% think AI will improve people’s ability to form those connections; 25% expect little impact.

Three markets, not one
Copilot dating is already majority-adjacent among U.S. singles (Arrows 54%, Match 26% and rising). Romantic companions are a large minority of singles (Match 16%; higher in Gen Z) and a rounding error in Pew’s all-adult frame (4%). Girlfriend apps as a business are a ~$3 billion 2025–26 segment with $19–25 billion 2030s forecasts if retention and payments hold — not Grand View’s $318 billion companion universe.
Until operators publish daily-open and voice-minute numbers, treat Match’s 16% and Arrows’ 54% as the public skeleton, Character.AI’s 20 million MAU as the scale ceiling of character chat, and $2.91 billion as the 2026 girlfriend-app stake in the ground.

FAQ
Questions people actually type
How big is the AI girlfriend market in 2026?
About $2.9 billion for girlfriend apps (Research and Markets $2.91B; SNS Insider $3.08B in 2025). Broader companion reports that include workplace and device bots are much larger (Grand View $36.8B in 2025, $48B in 2026). Do not mix those.
How many people are in an AI relationship?
Match (2025): 16% of U.S. singles have used AI as a romantic companion (33% Gen Z, 23% Millennial). Pew (2026): 4% of U.S. adults use chatbots for companionship. Wiingy’s Gen Z sample is higher (41%) and should not be treated as a national rate.
Is AI actually helping people get dates?
In 2025–26 dating surveys, AI users reported more confidence (48%), more profile interest (36% vs 24%), and more first dates (2.9 vs 1.4). The same literature shows a trust penalty when the other person learns a model wrote the chat.
Are teens using AI as a friend?
Common Sense Media (2025) found 72% of U.S. teens using AI for companionship under a wide definition. Pew’s teen surveys show high chatbot use (64%) but lower shares for emotional support (12%). Girlfriend apps on XXXFuel are 18+ products; teen stats are context, not a customer count.
What is the difference between AI dating and an AI girlfriend?
AI dating is a copilot for human dates (bios, flirt lines, date ideas). An AI girlfriend is the other party: a persistent companion with a name, memory, and usually a subscription. The first is already mainstream among singles. The second is the $2.9 billion app market.
