The titles that actually grew

LinkedIn’s January 2026 labor note is blunt: over two years the new AI-enabled seats clustered in AI engineers, forward-deployed engineers, and data annotators. AI Engineer is the #1 US role on that graph for a second year. Head of AI — a management title, not a Kaggle medal — jumped in a single year: Australia 32%, Canada 31%, India 30%, Germany 30%, UK 30%, US 28%.

Evaluation and red-teaming moved from a research side quest to a staff function. Applied research (fine-tune, retrieve, ship) outgrew pure research at every company that has customers. Platform / MLOps never stopped being the bottleneck; it just collected a new name every two quarters.

What they pay, without the influencer spreadsheet

Public aggregators in 2026 put a US AI engineer median somewhere in the mid six figures depending on whether you trust BLS’s computer-research bucket (~$145k median) or Glassdoor/levels mixes that pull in lab equity. Recruiter notes from early 2026 talk about senior specialists clearing $200k–$300k base in the US when the work is RAG, eval, and production, not a chatbot demo. Frontier-lab total compensation is a different sport and should not be used to price a bank’s AI team in Pune or Warsaw.

Prompt-only postings did not die. They got renamed. Job-board analyses in 2026 still show prompt skill language tripling versus 2024 — inside AI engineer, applied scientist, and “LLM” tickets. A standalone “prompt engineer” req is now a smell: either a company that has not shipped, or a lab that means evaluation engineer and has not updated the Greenhouse template.

If you already work next to a model, the promotion path is “own the failure cases.”

Non-engineering growth, which hiring managers keep forgetting

• Designers who specify behavior — not a chat UI, a refusal policy and a tone sheet.
• Writers who can run an eval set — gold answers, not blog posts about AI.
• Support leads who tune deflection — the person who notices the bot is lying to VIP accounts.
• Data-center and trades roles — LinkedIn counted 600,000+ AI-enabled data-center jobs in a year. Electricians do not need a PyTorch tattoo.

How to read a 2026 req without getting played

If the post says “prompt engineer” and the stack is “ChatGPT, Midjourney, Canva,” it is a marketing seat. If it says “AI engineer” and the stack is eval harnesses, retrieval, guardrails, and an on-call rotation, it is the growth job. If it says “research scientist” and there is no paper expectation, it is applied and they are paying research prices by accident — or they will correct that in a year.

BLS still projects computer and information research scientists to grow about 26% from 2023 to 2033, much faster than average. That occupation is a cousin of this market, not a map of it. Use it as a floor on demand, not a title translator.

A working map of 2026 titles

AI / applied engineer. RAG, evals, guardrails, on-call. This is the volume job. US base for mid-to-senior work is commonly quoted in the high five to low six figures before equity; do not use a frontier-lab tweet to price it in Hyderabad.

Forward-deployed engineer. Lives with the customer. Ships the first retrieval that does not embarrass sales. LinkedIn named the title because it finally showed up often enough to count. Compensation follows customer-facing engineering, not research.

Evaluation / red team. Staff, not intern. Owns the gold set, the jailbreak corpus, and the sentence “we cannot ship this.” In a lab this is close to research pay. In a bank it is closer to risk.

Head of AI. The double-digit growth in that title is companies putting a name on the org chart so the CEO has someone to shout at. The good version of the job is budget, vendors, and evals. The bad version is a slide deck and a Copilot license.

Annotation and data ops. Did not die. The work got more specialized — domain experts labeling legal or medical failure cases, not undergraduates drawing boxes. Pay is a spread from vendor-floor to specialist.

What to learn if you want one of these seats

One production path (an API, a retrieval store, an eval runner) beats six certificates. Domain knowledge — claims, code, copy, chemistry — is the scarce input once everyone can call a model. Writing a refusal policy is a skill. So is noticing that the bot is confident and wrong. Those are the non-engineering promotions hiding in support and editorial teams.

A note on salary screenshots

Twitter screenshots of a $700k lab offer are not a market. They are a lab. PwC still prints a roughly 25% wage premium for roles that list AI skills versus neighbors that do not. That premium is the number a CFO should care about.
